dark muscovado brownies

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 10:58 PM

As much as I am a fan of cocoa powder in bakes, there is a certain chocolate decadence that can never be replicated without the presence of melted chocolate. And when you pair that with the rich molasses from dark muscovado sugar, you’re most certainly on the right path to sheer brownie bliss.

Chewy, moist, fudgey, oh-so-chocolatey, and topped with a gorgeous crackly wrinkled crust;– I couldn’t ask for more in a decadent 2-inch square.

Recipe (and more photos) on my foodblog, or after the jump.

it fucks you up good, but it's not that bad

Finished Middlesex on my commute home tonight.

vague spoilers ) I enjoyed it very much, though. It was a quick, interesting, compelling read.

Now I just have to figure out what to read next.

Burn Notice

Oh my god, how much do I love Michael Westen? He's so competent! And Fi! And Madeleine! spoiler? )

I am already annoyed by having to sit with my ankle propped up with a bag of frozen peas on it. It's a good thing we went to the park last weekend, because there's no way I'd be able to do it now, though it actually doesn't hurt nearly as badly as it did last time, though I've been told by more than one person that spraining it badly once means it will forever be a weak spot. Sigh.

I guess it's a good thing all I am doing this weekend is waiting for the final four remixes, writing my femslash09 pinch hit, and my summergen story.

On the plus side, tonight in addition to some very fine cherries, I had a rich chocolate-hazelnut ice cream for dessert. It was mmm...tasty.

Joy of Baking mini muffins

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 12:08 PM
I have been craving blueberry muffins like mad lately so I finely buckled down and baked some. (I also turned the air conditioning up a smidgen to compensate.)

Recently my best friend gave me the 75th Anniversary Edition of The Joy of Cooking and it is quickly becoming my go to book. With 45oo recipes how could it not? But, on a more related note, I made their basic muffin mix, adding the blueberries and a 1/2 cup sour cream + 1/2 cup plain yogurt in lieu of the cream.

Here is a pic....

Mini Blueberry Sour Cream Muffins

Mmmm just look at that cinnamon sugar sprinkle!

I could not find a link to the recipe sorry, you'll just have to read the text behind the cut.

And here is the recipe text + one more pic. )

WARNING: If you make mini muffins like I did, you may end up eating a dozen before the cool. Just sayin'.

Oven Baked Macaroni and Cheese

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
This is my favorite macaroni and cheese recipe in the world. It's absolutely delicious and also deliciously easy. It takes about 5 minutes of prep and 45 minutes of hands-off baking. My boyfriend and I eat this as a main dish all the time, with salads or yeast rolls or . . . cupcakes. Ahem. The sausages on top are optional. Hope you enjoy!

Polo Buns

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 3:46 PM
Here in Singapore, these buns can be found in many bakeries. They're also known as "Pineapple Buns" not because they contain pineapple, but because of the lovely colour and scores that resembles pineapples. Its a soft round bun with a sweet "cap" over it. Absolutely delicious.

Trying to catch up again

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 7:03 PM
Isn't this ALWAYS the way? I think I'm good for catching up and then I get hit with other things. But at least the "other thing" was rather exciting this time: I'm working on putting together my first class. I'll be teaching Consumer Behavior both semesters next year and get to decide every element of the class from the chosen textbook to the syllabus design. Exciting! Also exceedingly terrifying!

In any event, it has been quite an experience contacting the publishers to get sample copies of their textbooks. I wrote to one company asking for a single edition of a the most popular CB textbook. Two hours later the area representative replied to me and said she was putting together a package of multiple textbooks, case study books, workbooks, and anything else I might find useful. Glancing at their website that's something like $600 (retail) worth of goods being expressed to me for free.

And then I heard from the other publishers doing much the same.

Huh! Quite the experience.
